7 Signs of Foundation Problems in Your Home

Foundation problems in most homes go unnoticed until they become severe. Therefore, as a homeowner, you must be aware of commonly occurring foundation problems. Other times, it could just be your home settling.

Detecting foundation problems isn’t difficult and this article can help homeowners identify common signs to look out for. If you notice some of the signs outlined here,  schedule a professional foundation inspection (and possible repair) as soon as you notice them:

1. Cracks in Exterior Wall

An obvious sign of foundation issues is the presence of cracks in exterior walls. Depending on the direction of the cracks, (e.g. vertical, horizontal, or diagonal), your home’s foundation could suffer from various issues that require repair. The causes for these problems can vary widely and may include poor structural design, water damage and other factors.

2. Weed Growth near Foundation

Excessive weed growth near a home’s foundation may indicate excessive moisture. While weeds in the yard are not a cause of concern,  weeds around the foundation may mean moisture is also seeping into foundation walls which can lead to crack-causing expansion and contraction throughout Rhode Island’s four seasons.

3. Uneven Floors

Uneven floors can also signify foundation problems. The causes for uneven floors could be linked to poor structural design, careless settlement, use of substandard materials, and water or termite damage. You can quickly notice this sign by placing a ball on the floor and seeing the direction in which it rolls.

4. Cracks in Floor Tiles

Similar to wooden floors, floor tiles can also reveal foundation problems. Cracked floor tiles may indicate that the foundation is compromised and may warrant further investigation. Since tiles are mainly used for flooring bathrooms and kitchens, cracked floor tiles may also indicate water infiltration from above, which can be corrected with waterproofing methods, but can also damage in the foundation.

5. Problems with Door and Window

Problems with doors and windows are another clear sign of foundation problems in Rhode Island. Doors and windows can shift or pull away when a foundation experiences changes or becomes compromised.

To inspect doors look for cracks in the frames or glass and test opening and closing them fully. If a door sticks, or a window is hard to open, if there are gaps in their frames despite them being closed, your home may haves foundation problems.

6.Foundation Problems: Peeling Paint or Wallpaper

Excess moisture in walls often leads to cracks as well as paint and peeling wallpaper. This type of moisture can seep into the foundation and weaken the foundation underneath.

What To Do Once You Detect Foundation Problems?

Foundation problems in Rhode Island can be tricky and can lead to unsafe living conditions in your home. It’s best to immediately identify and repair foundation issues and this is typically not a DIY project.

If you detect foundation issues contact a professional to help. A professional can help uncover the root cause of the issues, the extent of the damage incurred and devise a detailed repair plan.
